About this work

Several heavily draped, hooded figures crowd together in what reads as a boat or narrow platform, one raising a hand with fingers extended in a ritual gesture. Before them a nude figure lies face down, one arm hanging limp with curled fingers, sprawled across a long oar or plank. A coiled serpent rests at the lower edge, and a staff topped with an animal head stands to the side.

Deep, velvety charcoal blacks describe the heavy drapery against bare, untouched paper, with more carefully modeled flesh tones on the fallen figure. The shrouded faces and dense shadow build a somber, ritualistic, dreamlike mood suggestive of myth rather than ordinary life.
