About this work
A nude woman with long blond hair lies propped on one arm at the edge of a dark, blood-red pool, her expression withdrawn as she gazes downward. A smartphone in a blue-and-yellow patterned case rests on the ground beside her hip, and bare dead branches or reeds hang down from above into the reddened water.
The composition is built on a stark contrast between the warm, softly modeled flesh and the flat, saturated crimson that fills most of the lower canvas, with a strip of pale striped fabric along the top edge. Paint is applied thinly and dragged in the red passages, giving the scene a raw, unsettled, contemporary charge quite different from a conventional reclining nude.
