About this work
The left panel shows a man's bare back and bound arms as he sits atop a rough wooden stake, blood streaking his shoulder, above a crowd of anguished faces massed in the dark below. The right panel shows a muscular man in tattered trousers reaching up to grip a carved stone ornament atop a tower, climbing over a heap of pale bones with a walled, tower-lined city receding into the distance.
Both panels share the same near-black ground, lit by a single raking source that models flesh, blood, and bone in warm ivory and rust against cold shadow. Brushwork stays dense and textured on the figures, thinning to loose dark washes behind them, giving the pairing a grim, theatrical intensity.
