About this work
Three men sit shoulder to shoulder in a boat, arms flung out to the sides so that hands and elbows overlap; each wears different headgear - a dark kerchief, a wide straw hat, a striped cap - and one sports a thin mustache. Below them the boat holds a red anchor, coils of rope, an oar, a metal watering can and a round net frame, suggesting a fishing or boating outing.
Flesh and fabric are built from faceted, overlapping planes of dusty blue, sand and coral pink against a pale sky, giving the composition a cubist, poster-like flatness. Bold outlines and chalky, matte brushwork simplify anatomy into geometric shapes, producing a lively, almost theatrical energy despite the title's hint of discord.
