About this work
A tall figure with an elaborate feathered headdress and a jewel-encrusted gown stands centre frame, eyes closed, head tilted back, hands raised with faint extra hand shapes layered around them. Red lilies and roses flank her along a bright horizontal line dividing the canvas; below it, in murkier tones, a horse's head, a staring fish eye and another jewelled face float among thorny stems.
The upper half glows in warm golds and reds built from thick, textured brushwork and glinting flecks that mimic gemstones, while the lower half shifts to cooler greens, suggesting a submerged reflection. The dense jewel-like patterning and doubled hands give the surface a decorative, hallucinatory intensity, pairing light above with shadow below.
