About this work
A pale, falcon-headed figure sits enthroned on a boat drifting across dark blue water before an enormous glowing red sun disc. Muscular red-skinned beings and horned, animal-headed demons crowd the vessel and its banks. Above, pale and multicolored figures process holding long red, orange and blue cloths; below, a fiery gorge separates them from another procession of nude figures in white, orange and blue-toned skin walking together.
Deep blacks, blues and greens ground the composition, punctuated by fiery orange and red passages that read almost as if lit from within. Thick black contours flatten the stylized bodies into a comic-strip-like sequence of registers, giving the ancient myth a hallucinatory, otherworldly charge.
