About this work
A young woman in a voluminous red brocade gown embroidered with hearts, clubs and diamond motifs stands centrally, one foot stepping forward from beneath the skirt as if mid-curtsy or dance step. Two attendants in oriental-style robes flank her: one holds a folding fan and a caged bird, the other lifts a flute. Roses, irises, lilies and delphiniums crowd the background, and an iridescent, peacock-like bird perches at her feet.
Every surface is covered in dense, jewel-toned ornament — gold embroidery, patterned textiles and layered flower petals rendered in saturated reds, blues and greens. The flattened, richly decorative treatment and theatrical costume give the scene a festive, folk-tale opulence rather than naturalistic space.
