About this work
The canvas is organized into stacked horizontal registers of varying width and texture, moving from a dark blue upper zone through a pitted rust-orange band, a pale grey-white strip, and lower bands of ochre and black. Small cream and orange rectangular fragments interrupt the bands like inserted tiles, and scattered raised granules texture several of the strips.
Built up with heavy impasto, incised lines and grainy encrusted surface, the acrylic is worked over an ivory ground so the underlayer glows through cracks and edges. The rough, stratified layering and muted earth-and-indigo palette give the surface a weathered, geological quality rather than depicting any recognizable scene.
