About this work
A market counter is heaped with fresh catch — pink and silver fish, a red crab, coiled eel, octopus, lobsters, mussels and squid spread across ice-flecked trays. Behind it a man in an orange apron cleans fish, a gloved woman crouches by a bowl, a boy in a striped shirt naps against her shoulder, and another woman looks toward the viewer beneath a hanging stingray and tuna.
Cool blues and greens in the shaded stall set off the warm pinks and reds of the seafood in the foreground light. Loose, confident brushwork builds the overlapping fish and shells with quick strokes of color, while the resting figures behind are painted more softly, giving the crowded stall a lively, documentary feel.
