About this work
A low, ornate palace with a domed pediment and colonnaded wings sits at the center, its windows and walls lit warmly against the fading evening sky. Bare-branched trees and a tall conifer frame it on either side, with rounded topiary lining the approach. The foreground is deep drifts of snow sweeping toward the viewer.
The composition rests on contrast between the glowing pink and gold facade and the saturated blues and violets of snow and dusk sky. Brushwork is broad and energetic, with thick ridges of paint describing the snow's furrows and the trees' silhouettes. The effect is theatrical, a warm lit building against a cold winter night.
