About this work
Three men are clustered tightly together, arms interlocked around each other's shoulders and backs, teeth bared and brows lowered in aggressive, determined expressions. They lean forward as one mass, as if forming a human wall about to advance, their bodies merging at the edges into a single dense shape.
The palette is limited to greys, taupe and near-black, relieved only by chalky white highlights, giving the group a grisaille, almost monochrome look. Loose, urgent brushwork and scraped, dragged textures blur the edges of the figures into the pale ground, producing a raw, confrontational tension.
