About this work

Two men in green military uniforms with gold epaulettes stand behind a seated nude woman, one wearing a red-plumed shako, the other a black eye mask. Draped loosely in lilac cloth, wearing dark stockings and heels, she leans back against them with her eyes closed. An old wind-up gramophone sits on the grass beside her, while a sunlit landscape recedes behind the group.

The uniforms are flat, saturated green with gold detail, set against the pale, smoothly modeled flesh of the woman and soft ochre tones of the landscape. Light is bright, more like a stage set than a natural moment, and the mix of period dress, blindfold mask and antique gramophone gives the scene an unsettling, dreamlike air.
