About this work
A solitary leafless tree with a curved trunk and wind-swept branches rises from a grassy riverbank. To its right stands a weathered wooden house with a peaked metal roof and an attached shed, while a river stretches away to the left beneath a wide expanse of heavy cloud.
Muted olive-greens, greys and browns form an almost monochrome palette, the sky built up in soft mottled brushwork suggesting damp, low cloud. Diffuse backlight puts a faint gleam on the water. Loose, subdued handling gives the hushed rural scene a somber, still weight despite the tree's wind-bent gesture.
