About this work
A monumental butterfly form spans nearly the entire canvas, its symmetrical wings broken into overlapping flat panels crossed by fine vein-like lines radiating from a dark central body. No background setting is suggested beyond the abstracted planes of tone surrounding the insect's silhouette.
The surface is worked in bone white, sand, rust and charcoal, heavily scraped, sanded and scratched to give a weathered, relief-like texture. Strong contrasts of light and dark move across the wings, turning a familiar natural form into an austere, almost sculptural pattern with an air of quiet mystery.
