About this work
A man in a dark coat and tall boots trudges through snow, leading a donkey by its halter; a woman wrapped in a red shawl rides side-saddle on its back, legs bundled against the cold. Behind them bare, dark-limbed trees lean across the path, several bullfinches perched among the branches, with small snow-covered rooftops in the distance.
The scene is rendered in muted greys, whites and browns, broken only by the woman's red wrap and the birds' rosy breasts. Outlines are firm and forms simplified almost to silhouette, giving a flattened, graphic quality, while the low light and the figures' tired postures lend the scene a subdued, melancholic mood.
