About this work
A sandy dune path winds from the foreground toward a calm expanse of sea, flanked by clumps of dry reeds and blue-green beach grasses. A stranded rowboat rests on the shore to the right, with a low wooded point closing the bay in the distance under a heavy, clouded sky.
Muted blues, greys and sandy ochres are built up in thick, dry strokes, with touches of teal and violet picking out the grasses. The heavy impasto and coarse texture of the foreground sand contrast with the smoother, hazier handling of the sea and sky, producing a quiet, breezy stillness.
