About this work
A tall, richly decorated bell tower with tiers of columns, arched windows and a thin spike-like spire rises behind a row of plain rooftops and brick chimneys. Small statues occupy niches partway up the tower, and the pitched roofs and chimney stacks in the foreground sit in near silhouette, framing the illuminated structure against the sky.
Etched in fine, dense linework, the tower is left pale and warmly toned while the speckled, granular sky and shadowed roofs are worked into near-black darkness, creating a strong glow-in-the-dark contrast. The stippled texture across the sky reads as a field of stars, and tight crosshatching on the stonework gives it carved relief. The nocturnal contrast lends the print a hushed, almost ceremonial stillness.
