About this work
A stone bridge crosses a frozen, snow-dusted canal in the foreground, its arches echoed by a second bridge further back on the left. Beyond the water rises the gilded spire and blue-and-white tiers of St. Nicholas Cathedral's bell tower, flanked by bare autumn-toned trees and a tall ochre apartment building with a snow-capped roof.
Cool blues and whites of the ice and sky are set against warm ochre and rust tones in the buildings, with the golden spire catching the brightest light. Loose, thick strokes describe snow, stonework, and reflections without fine detail, giving the crisp, hushed feel of a clear winter afternoon.
