About this work
A dark barge or boat hull, sketched with a loose gold outline, sits low in the water toward the upper left of the canvas; a band of grey-blue marks the waterline beneath it. The rest of the composition is filled with loose gestural strokes of pink, mauve and violet suggesting reflections and riverbank vegetation, with sparse scratched gold lines reading as rigging or masts.
The palette is almost entirely pink-violet with grey and touches of gold, applied in broad, dragged strokes and thin scratched lines over a heavily textured ground. The abstraction and soft, rosy light give the river scene a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere.
