About this work
A standing male dancer in harem trousers and a jeweled tunic extends his hand down to a reclining female dancer in a beaded, veiled costume who reaches up toward him from the tiled floor; both wear elaborate jewelry, turbans and richly patterned fabric. They are set against a black backdrop framed by heavy gold, orange and turquoise curtains patterned with paisley motifs, above a black-and-white checkered floor.
The costumes are painted in dense, saturated golds, reds and blues with flat, decorative patterning that flattens the space around the two figures, while the curtain folds are rendered in broad, ornamental strokes. The theatrical lighting, exotic dress and stylized poses evoke a staged, glamorous ballet tableau full of drama.
