About this work
A steep outcrop of dark reddish-brown rock, edged with dense fir trees, rises on the left above a bend in a path that winds down toward a turquoise pond on the right. A small white chapel with a blue cupola sits on the crest of the pale grassy hill behind, set against low dark hills on the horizon.
The palette moves from rust and umber in the rocks to soft grey-green and ochre across the grassy slopes, under a heavily clouded sky rendered in broad strokes of grey and lilac. Brushwork is loose and blended, building form through tonal shifts rather than sharp edges, giving the hillside a quiet, overcast, autumnal calm.
