About this work
Four square canvases form a grid, each showing fallen leaves strewn across textured ground seen from directly above: pale ochre and grey leaves over lilac-grey stone, elongated willow-like leaves over rust-red ground, more slender leaves over a similar red-brown surface, and golden maple leaves scattered across a blue-grey field.
The muted autumnal palette of dusty violet, rust, ochre and sage is built up with thickly textured paint that suggests rough pavement or soil beneath the leaves. Soft, even light leaves few hard shadows, and the tight cropping turns the woodland floor into a quiet, melancholic pattern of decay.
