About this work
A woman crouches low on a black-and-white diamond-tiled terrace, one arm extended toward a spray of peacock feathers lying at her feet. Diaphanous beige fabric billows around her bare shoulders and back as she leans forward, head bowed. Beyond a row of round arches, potted shrubs and a full-tailed peacock line a balustrade, while small birds cross a pale sky in the distance.
Warm ochres and dark reds of the arcade contrast with the dancer's pale drapery and skin, the palette hushed and earthy. Brushwork is smooth and closely blended in the figure, looser and more textured in the peacock's plumage and foliage, lending the scene a quiet, theatrical stillness.
