About this work
A single tall, thin-trunked tree with a rounded, umbrella-like crown rises at the center of an otherwise empty landscape, its trunk bare of branches until near the top. Two lower, wind-blown shrubs of similar dark reddish-brown foliage flank it along a low horizon, sitting on a dark, undefined stretch of ground beneath a wide expanse of pale sky.
The palette is reduced to a few flat tones -- cool blue-grey sky, near-black earth, and rust-brown foliage -- applied in broad, dry strokes that leave the surface texture visible in places. The simplified, almost silhouette-like treatment of the trees and the empty, low horizon give the scene a spare, contemplative stillness.
