Asleep

A pale face is turned on its side with eyes shut and mouth relaxed, filling the upper portion of the canvas as if resting on an unseen pillow. A hand emerges below, fingers curled near the chin, while streaks and flecks of red and orange gather at the lower edge like scattered warmth beneath the cool surface.

Deep ultramarine and cobalt blues dominate the thickly scraped and dripped surface, interrupted by pale flesh tones on the face and hand and sudden bursts of red, orange and gold at the base. Heavy impasto, drips and scratched textures create a brooding, dreamlike stillness around the sleeping figure.
