About this work
The archangel Gabriel appears in profile, golden hair bound by a pearl-edged fillet beneath a round inscribed halo. Feathered wings rise behind the shoulders in overlapping bronze and ochre plumage, one hand raised while the other holds pale blue lilies, gestures recalling the Annunciation. The dark red-orange robe is covered in dense floral brocade, with a stone wall at left and "Gabriel" lettered in gold below.
Flat gilded backgrounds, sharply outlined ornament, and a cool ivory face built from soft shading recall early Renaissance icon painting rendered in oil. The palette centers on burnt orange, maroon and gold, lifted by touches of powder blue. Controlled linear brushwork and flattened pattern give the image a hieratic, devotional stillness.
