About this work
Four women in profile, paired at either side, flank a pointed gothic panel tiled like stained glass with green mosaic and small perched songbirds. A lattice of pale branches spans the whole square, more birds resting among them; the women hold a chalice, an ewer and a small lantern, while irises, poppies and narcissus bloom in the lower corners beside a white lamb's head.
The palette stays close to ivory and cream, warmed by ochre skin tones and touches of jewel-bright bird plumage and flowers. Fine, linear drawing and flat, decorative modeling recall Art Nouveau ornament rather than natural light and shadow. The dense symmetrical pattern and quiet profiles give the scene a calm, contemplative stillness.
