Apples

Two apples, one green blushed with red and one deep red-and-yellow, sit on a white blue-rimmed plate. Beside the plate a tall glass of amber tea holds a spoon, and a small matchbox rests at lower right, the whole arrangement set on a table draped in a boldly striped red, teal and green cloth.

Paint is applied in thick, loaded strokes with strong outlines around the fruit, and the diagonal stripes are laid on with equally heavy, confident touches. Saturated primary and secondary colors clash and harmonize at once, giving the modest tabletop scene a bold, folk-bright, energetic charge.
