About this work
Three apples are lined up close together on a smooth tabletop in front of a large window, their stems missing and small dark cavities visible at the top of each fruit. Soft shadows and faint reflections stretch beneath them across the glossy surface, while a dark vertical wall edge frames the composition at right.
The palette is almost monochrome, built from soft greys, ivory and pale ochre with only a touch of warm yellow in the apple skins. Forms are rendered with a soft, blurred edge as if seen slightly out of focus, and the diffuse window light flattens contrast across the scene. The effect is quiet and contemplative, a hushed study of simple objects in even light.
