About this work
An elevated, panoramic view looks down over freshly plowed and terraced farmland, its furrows curving in concentric bands across the foreground and middle ground. Small buildings and a hint of a village are visible where the fields meet a low ridge of blue-grey hills, under a pale, hazy sky.
The soil is rendered in warm bands of ochre, rust, brown and violet-grey, applied in loose, directional strokes that follow the plowed lines and give the earth a strongly textured, almost woven surface. Cooler, softer tones in the distant hills and sky create depth, and the overall effect is quiet and expansive, a calm rural panorama built from color and pattern rather than incident.
