About this work
An angel with long wavy hair and large feathered wings leans forward over a low, ornately patterned wooden chest, one hand resting beside a smooth green bowl carved to resemble nephrite. She wears a red under-tunic beneath a rose-mauve mantle with a patterned border. White lilies bloom to the left, and behind her a hazy arcade of ruined columns and arches recedes into soft golden light.
Warm russet, rose and olive tones are set against the cool green of the bowl, the whole surface worked in a fine, textured, almost embroidered manner. Light glows softly from the background ruins, gently modeling the wings and face while flattening the patterned fabrics into decoration. The overall feeling is calm and devotional, close to an icon in mood.
