About this work
At left, a woman in a floor-length red robe with a gold embroidered band stands with eyes closed inside a halo of red roses, a white dove perched on her raised hand. Beside her, tall white lilies rise before three winged women in ornate gold, teal and orange robes - one wears a flower wreath, another plays a flute, and the third strums a mandolin-like instrument, their feathered wings spanning the upper half of the canvas.
Saturated jewel tones - crimson, gold, turquoise and violet - fill dense, patterned surfaces, with flowers and small birds crowding the gaps between figures. The flattened, ornamental treatment and the figures' lowered gazes give the scene a hushed, iconic solemnity.
