About this work
A rocky inlet on the Crimean coast opens onto turquoise water, with pale boulders in the foreground where waves break into white foam. A green two-storey house and an open wooden gazebo stand on a low cliff above a small dark boat moored at the water's edge, framed by a wooded, rocky headland closing the bay on the right.
Vivid turquoise and cobalt sea tones play against warm ochre and grey rock and cool green foliage. Paint is built up thickly, the crashing foam and jagged stones rendered with confident, textured strokes of a loaded brush or knife. Bright, direct sunlight creates sharp contrasts of light and shadow, giving the cove an energetic, breezy freshness.
