About this work
A small glass kerosene lantern and a jar of yellow flowers and purple aster rest on the worn planks of a wooden footbridge, beside a wicker basket. Clusters of orange rowan berries hang over the railing, while the bridge leads the eye toward a distant field, a small house and a line of forest under a pale sky, faintly reflected in the water below.
Muted greens, ochre and grey-brown dominate the weathered wood and foliage, warmed by the rowan clusters and touches of yellow and violet in the bouquet. Paint is applied in soft strokes for the misty distance and thicker dabs for the berries and blossoms up close. The mood is quiet and damp, suggesting the hush after rainfall.
