About this work
A weathered wooden house with a steep, patched roof and boarded upper window stands at the center of a clearing, its porch railing and covered entry visible below. Bare trees and a single dark conifer flank the building, and in the foreground large felled tree trunks and stumps, their cut faces ringed with growth lines, lie scattered among frost-covered grass and shrubs.
Rendered entirely in grey, black and white, the scene relies on dense, engraving-like linework and stippling to model bark texture, roof shingles and frost on every branch. The high-contrast, meticulous detail and absence of color give the abandoned house a still, wintry desolation.
