About this work
A woman's head and shoulders fill the sheet, drawn frontally with a direct, unflinching gaze at the viewer. Loose graphite defines the brows, nose, and shoulders, while a mass of tight copper curls frames the face; a touch of purple and blue shading suggests a scarf or garment over one shoulder, and both hands rest loosely below, only lightly indicated.
Red pencil is used sparingly but pointedly around the eyes, on the lips, and across the cheeks, giving the face a flushed, almost feverish intensity against the otherwise bare graphite sketch. The economy of line and the concentrated color make the stare the focal point, lending the portrait a raw, unsettled mood.
