About this work
A close bust portrait shows a young person with short curly hair, a squared jaw and one eye half-closed in a wry, appraising look, wearing a bulky zip-up jacket with a folded collar and a rectangular patch on the chest. The figure fills most of the sheet against a bare, undefined background, hands left out of the frame.
The drawing is built from a single continuous charcoal contour, economical and largely unbroken, with almost no interior shading. Faint smudges around the collar show the softness of the charcoal against the paper, giving the portrait an informal, quick-study directness rather than a posed likeness.
