About this work
A muscular reddish-brown bull with curved horns stands in profile at lower left, surrounded by dense green undergrowth and a tall, dark-trunked tree that rises through the center of the canvas. Beyond the foliage, pale blue mountains and a bright sun appear at upper left, and a line of handwritten Russian script runs across the top of the sky.
Foliage is built from loose, overlapping strokes of yellow-green, olive and dark green, applied with a loaded brush that leaves ridges and drips visible. The bull is modeled more smoothly in warm reddish-brown tones, standing out as a solid form against the flickering, sunlit greenery. The saturated palette and inscribed text give the jungle-like scene a vivid, almost parable-like charge.
