About this work
Two large trunks frame the left side of a wooded clearing where a stream flows toward the viewer between banks of speckled grey scrub. Dense dark undergrowth crowds the right edge while thinner trees rise along the far bank, and the water's pale ripples carry warm rust and ochre streaks down its length.
The palette stays close to grisaille, grey and near-black set against the water's muted warm tones, applied in heavy, textured strokes that read as much as surface pattern as description of foliage. The overall effect is somber, still and melancholic, a hushed corner of quiet woodland.
