About this work

A close-up portrait shows a head bound in a checkered black, white and gray scarf that covers the mouth, nose and hair, leaving only the eyes and brow exposed; the eyes look directly outward, one appearing paler than the other. The dark maroon-black background is filled edge to edge with dense red cursive script resembling verses of scripture.

The visible skin is modeled in smooth, pale tones against the geometric black-and-white pattern of the wrapped cloth, painted in crisp, flat blocks. The red inscription is set down in a fine, looping hand that contrasts with the broader planes of the face and scarf, and the tight framing and steady gaze give the portrait a hushed, oracular intensity.
