About this work
A colossal head in profile, hair streaming into jagged rock, fills the left side of the composition beneath an enormous hand reaching down from above. A framed inset shows a stark mountain peak under a pale sun, and below it a raven's head opens its beak beside tiny huddled figures perched on the giant's brow. To the right, a lone hurdy-gurdy player walks past shuttered buildings on a cobbled street.
Everything is rendered in fine, dense etched linework, with heavy black shading around the head and raven set against the lighter, more open hatching of the mountain vignette and street scene. The fragmented, dreamlike combination of giant body parts, bird, and solitary wanderer creates an eerie, wintry sense of isolation.
