About this work
A woman with wind-blown blonde hair stands astride an oversized cello whose body doubles as the wide, patterned skirt of her gown; she draws a bow across its strings with one hand and steadies herself on a taut tightrope with the other. Below her, a row of dark, spiky trees is silhouetted against a streaked, atmospheric sky, and her feet, in dance-like slippers, balance delicately along the line.
Loose, dragged brushstrokes create a smeared, weathered sky of teal, ochre and rust, while the figure and instrument are rendered in flatter, more graphic patterning with strong outlines. The fusion of musician, instrument and dress, combined with the impossible tightrope pose, gives the image a dreamlike, whimsical quality.
