About this work
Two slender birches with bare, wind-swept branches lean in the foreground above a river. A reddish-brown earthen bank rises behind them, giving way to a green meadow, distant trees, and a cluster of small village houses along the far shore under a broad, clouded sky.
Muted earth tones and soft grays are laid in loose, fluid washes typical of watercolor, with fine dark lines describing the birch trunks and whipping twigs. The pale, diffused sky and soft-edged clouds suggest a raw, breezy day, giving the whole scene a quiet, blustery restlessness.
