About this work

A wide canal cuts through the composition beneath a swirling pale sky, flanked by stone embankments with wrought-iron railings, a humped footbridge, parked cars and rows of townhouses culminating in a slender church spire. A few solitary figures pause along the balustrade, and streetlamps glow at intervals down the quay toward the distant skyline.

Rendered in muted grey, ochre and charcoal tones typical of lithographic printmaking, the scene builds its mood through fine cross-hatching and soft tonal gradation rather than color. Lamplight and its rippled reflection in the canal punctuate the otherwise monochrome dusk, giving the empty embankment a hushed, contemplative stillness characteristic of a northern white night.
