About this work
A cluster of young women crowd the foreground of a railway platform, wrapped in dark coats and patterned headscarves; one carries a bundle wrapped in twine, another holds a parcel tied with blue ribbon. Behind them a black steam locomotive looms out of drifting white smoke, its driver leaning from the cab, while a signal post and platform crowd fade into the haze.
Muted greys, browns and olive greens dominate, broken by touches of coral, teal and gold in the women's clothing. Thick, visible brushstrokes build the coats and smoke alike, giving the scene a rough, unfinished immediacy typical of mid-century Soviet genre painting, and the huddled poses and steam-fogged air lend it a sense of quiet anticipation before departure.
