About this work
A seated young woman plucks the strings of a lute-like instrument cradled in her lap, her head bent slightly toward the sound. She wears a loose white blouse with a dark bodice, and a floral brocade skirt trimmed in lace spills over her knee, with a dark shoe peeking from beneath the lace hem. Behind her, a wall of ornate reddish-gold damask fills the space, with a darker curtain at the right edge.
Warm ochre and burgundy dominate, the damask ground built up in thick, textured strokes against smoother handling in the face and blouse. Focused light picks out her hands and the instrument's pale soundboard, lending the scene an intimate, absorbed quiet.
