About this work
A bare-chested bearded man reclines at left holding a large eagle, with an owl perched beside them; a second bearded man in a mustard sweater raises a wine glass while a fish-headed figure and a horse-faced cubist mask look on from the right. In the foreground a red cloth holds a dead fish, a wine bottle, and dried thistles, with grotesque stone heads and stylized birds crowding the background above.
Cool grey stonework contrasts with warm reds, ochres, and flesh tones, the paint applied in tight, graphic detail across every figure and object. The crowded, overlapping composition and staring, masklike faces build a dense, enigmatic atmosphere somewhere between myth and dream.
