About this work
A pale, semi-nude female figure rises from a stone-like stepped column wreathed in water lilies, her body merging into the textured stalk below the waist. A tall white lily headdress crowns her head, her hair trailing down in strands hung with drops, while two herons stand on either side among reeds, purple irises and open lily blossoms.
The scene is painted in deep, glowing blue-greens and pale turquoise whites, with the figure and birds picked out in luminous highlights against the dark, nocturnal water and foliage. Richly worked, almost jeweled brushwork and cool moonlit tones create a hushed, otherworldly, dreamlike stillness.
