About this work
A close, low view of a woodland edge shows a fallen bough lying across tussocks of dry golden grass. Patchy snow covers the ground unevenly, exposing dark earth between the drifts, while a dense screen of leafless shrubs and slender trunks closes off the background.
Pastel is worked in soft greys, ochres and muted greens, with white built up in dry, granular strokes for the remaining snow. Diffuse, overcast light keeps contrasts gentle, and the close, ground-level framing gives the scene a quiet, unassuming stillness.
