About this work
Tall, closely spaced pine and birch trunks form a dense wall at the edge of a clearing, their bases surrounded by melting, patchy snow that reveals bare earth and grass beneath. Broken evergreen branches lie scattered across the foreground snow, and a strip of green grass opens up in a sunlit clearing to the right.
Cool blue-grey shadows model the snow while warm ochre and green tones mark the thawed patches of ground, the dense trunks rendered as vertical bands of dark red-brown and violet receding into haze. Pastel strokes are loose and broken throughout, capturing the softened light of a damp, transitional season with a quiet, subdued mood.
